Lafayette - Martha Henagan Luby, age 89, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 21, 2021. She was born on December 22, 1931, in DeQuincy, Louisiana to Joseph Warren and Sarah Agnes (Harvey) Henagan.
Martha was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Lafayette and dedicated many years to the Woman's Missionary Union. She faithfully remembered others in her prayers, visited nursing homes, transported elderly church members to Sunday School, and was always cooking and baking to comfort others in times celebration, illness, and mourning.
Martha was a member of the Louisiana Teachers Association, Nursing Home Board, Lafayette Optimist Club, and "Krewe of Karencro". She received her bachelor's degree in Primary Education from McNeese State University and her master's degree in Education, with a +30 hour Reading Specialty, from the University of Lafayette. She devoted 37 years to teaching and shaping young people in the Lafayette Parish community. Martha was a long serving member of the Lafayette Genealogical Society and enjoyed researching her genealogy and teaching others how to find missing branches in their family tree.
To her dear sweet friends, please know she cherished your love and companionship. She always looked forward to spending time with you at WMU, Joy Luck Club, "card playing Thursdays", and other social interactions. We witnessed firsthand her excitement preparing delicious foods and desserts for your enjoyment.
As her family, we lovingly know her as our Mama and Maw-Maw. For over 66 years, she was our father's devoted and loving bride "Marco", until last year when God called him Home. Daddy often told us, 'he sought a virtuous woman to be his wife and the mother of his children', and he felt God led him to this "Proverbs 31" woman. She doted on her husband, children, and grandchildren and we always knew her love was boundless and unconditional.
Until we see her again, we will remember that she enjoyed having her family near, surrounded by her love, and perpetually wrapped in her prayers. She revealed her love through everyday acts of kindness and caring and always insisted in her distinct southern drawl, "I love all my children equally!"
The Good Lord welcomed Home before her—her parents, her husband, John F. Luby, Jr.; her sisters, Ollie Long and Lorraine Proctor, her brothers Jack and Willie Henagan, and her daughter-in-love, Kim Braun Luby. Now left to remember her love and compassion, are her four children: John F. Luby III, Vallerie Luby Worzala (Dan), Dwayne Luby (Sandra), and Bryan Luby (Christi); her brother-in-law Walter Luby; her 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and daughter-in-love, Pamela Lamb. She is also survived by four nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 25th from 5-8 PM at Delhomme Funeral Home on Bertrand Drive. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 26th at 11 AM, at First Baptist Church of Lafayette, with church visitation beginning at 10 AM. The memorial service will be followed by a graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Lafayette.
Pallbearers are: John F. Luby III, Dwayne Luby, Bryan Luby, Jacob Luby, Mark Luby, and Chris Clark.
