LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 10:00 AM Catholic Service in Martin & Castille's La Fleur de Lis Chapel for Alberta Marie Gilbert Baer, age78, who passed away peacefully Sunday, September 1, 2013 at her residence in Lafayette surrounded by her four daughters.
Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Reverend Steve LeBlanc, Pastor of St Pius X Catholic Church, will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Sue LeBlanc and Robert Gilbert. Jodi Bollich, organist and soloist, will sing for the services, "Amazing Grace," "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman," "Be Not Afraid," and "I Can Only Imagine." Jennifer Baer will give the eulogy.
She leaves to cherish her memory daughters Sharon B Newman (Gary) of Broussard, Louisiana, Bonnie B LeBlanc (Mike) of Lafayette, Louisiana, Donna B Mertz of Broussard, Louisiana and Jennifer Baer of Ghent, New York; thirteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sister Nell Drobish of Lafayette, Louisiana, and brother, Robert Gilbert of Lafayette, Louisiana. She is also survived by daughter in law, Debi Baer.
She was preceded in death by husband, Phillip J Baer; son Phillip R Baer; parents Roy and Lula M Gilbert; and brother Jasper Gilbert.
Alberta was born August 30, 1935 in Indian Bayou, Louisiana and was a resident of Lafayette for most of her life. "Mama Baer", as she was affectionately known to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, found great joy in dancing, peace in her garden, contentment in a good book and humor in everyday life. She was smarter than she would admit, stronger than she realized and braver than anyone knew, a noble heart that will live on in the memories of her family and friends for years to come.
Pallbearers will be Neil Simon, Phil B Baer, Lance LeBlanc, Ben LeBlanc, Zachary Adams and Todd Drobish.
A Rosary will be recited by Geneva Breaux Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 7:00 PM in Martin & Castille's SOUTHSIDE location.
The family requests that visitation be observed Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and will continue on Wednesday from 8:00 AM until time of services.
The family would like to give special thanks to the nurses and staff of Hospice of Acadiana, especially Iggy Landry and Rose Lilly, for the kindness, compassion and gentle care given to "Mama Baer" and her family during their time of need.
