Mr Bateman died during an accident at J & J Sand and Gravel Company. He was the husband of Audrey Barnes Bateman and son of Daniel Franklin and Carrie Ruthland Bateman. He was a 1936 graduate of Franklinton High School and graduated in 1942 from Southwestern Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana, then entered the military for nearly 6 years. After his military career he entered the Louisiana State University in 1947 to work on his master's, but interest turned him toward politics in 1948. In his first political bid, he was elected Clerk of Court and served that office until 1964. Mr Bateman was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Masons.
