Mr. Arthur Gerteis, 88, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2016, at his home after a brief illness. Graveside services were held on Friday, July 15th, at Forest Park Cemetery. Officiating was Father Joseph Howard of the Catholic Center.
Mr. Gerteis was a native of Regensberg, Switzerland and a resident of Shreveport for 57 years. He was a mechanical engineer in Switzerland and was recruited in 1959 by Harry Washburn to work at the first VW dealership on Texas Ave. He continued to repair VW’s and European automobiles at Gerteis Motors until his illness. Mr. Gerteis was an avid racer and had a passion for caring for stray animals.
Mr. Gerteis was preceded in death by his wife, Nelly Rombaldi Gerteis; and daughter, Eva Maria Chmielewski. He is survived by his son, Hans Peter Gerteis and wife, Dr. Ann Hollister; son-in-law, Ernie Chmielewski; grandchildren, Arthur Chmielewski, and Peter and Christina Gerteis; and great grandchildren, Sarah Chmielewski and Makenzie Gerteis.
The family requests that memorials be made in lieu of flowers to the ASPCA.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to University Health, Saint Joseph’s Hospice, Magnolia Manor and Ms. Kriston Nichols.
