Beverly Ray Burlingame passed away on September 24, 2014, in Dallas, TX. Beverly graduated in 1990 with high honors from the University of Texas Law School, where she was a member of Order of the Coif. She practiced law at Thompson & Knight LLP in Dallas for over 15 years. She was a partner there prior to retiring for medical reasons in 2006. While she was in law school, Beverly served as executive editor of Texas Law Review. A law review article that she authored was selected by the Scribes Journal to receive its annual award as the best student-written article published in a law review or journal. She served as a law clerk to Judge John M. Duhe of the Fifth Circuit in 1990. Beverly was a published poet and frequent editor of publications by Bryan Garner. She was an elected member of the American Law Institute. In 2003 she was inaugurated in Scribes' 40th president. Prior to attending law school, she received a bachelor of arts in music, magna cum laude, from SMU and a master of arts in music, summa cum laude, from the University of North Texas. She was employed as a music teacher, English teacher, and technical editor before she began her legal career. Beverly was born on August 27, 1953 in Baton Rouge, LA, and was the daughter of Joe T. Ray and Winnie Buckels Ray. She is survived by her brother Judge Thomas Ray of Little Rock and her sister JoAnne Ray of Houston; her nieces Erin Ray of Little Rock and Kaitlin Ray of Los Angeles and her nephew Daniel LeBlanc of Los Angeles; Darrell Booker, her fiance'; Stuart Lee, her best friend since their days at SMU; two beagles; and thousands of squirrels descended from those she rehabilitated as a volunteer Texas wildlife rehabilitator. A memorial service for Beverly will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home on Monday, September 29 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the JDRF, which seeks to create a world without juvenile diabetes.
