Barney Edward Davitt died unexpectedly at his home in Baton Rouge on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006. He was 89, born in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 1916, the son of Edward Michael and Dottie Steele Davitt. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and saw action in the North Atlantic, North African-Middle Eastern and Southwest Pacific theaters of operation. He received bachelor's and masters degrees in journalism from LSU. After the war, he held a public relations post with the U.S. government in South America. Upon returning to the United States, he became a political and editorial writer for Washington D.C., newspapers. He also taught journalism and public relations courses at LSU and Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, and after retirement taught courses in celestial navigation for the U.S. Power Boat Squadron and courses in Spanish for the Baton Rouge Council on Aging. He had served as state director of the U.S. Brewers Association and was a member of the Louisiana Travel Council, the Public Relations Society of America, the Southeastern Louisiana chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the national professional journalism association, and the American Legion. He had been an associate member of the Louisiana Press Association, Louisiana Municipal Association and the Louisiana Peace Officers Association.

He is survived by his widow, Alvern B. Davitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Edmonds Funeral Home chapel, Jonesboro, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7. A memorial service will be held at the Celebration of Life Church, 1149 Tamari Drive, Baton Rouge, at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, conducted by the Rev. Anthony Rice. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
