Politician and Philanthropist. A native of France, Poydras was captured by the British in 1760 while serving in the French Navy but escaped to San Domingo and immigrated to New Orleans in 1768. He served in the eleventh U.S. Congress (1809-1811), wrote the first poem published in the state of Louisiana ("La Prise du Morne du Baton Rouge par Monseigneur de la Galvez"), founded the Female Orphan Asylum in New Orleans and the Poydras Aslylum, and bequeathed a large amount of money for education in Point Coupee Parish, resulting in his sometimes being referred to as "the father of public education in Louisiana."
