History *EVERGREEN CEMETERY

Evergreen Cemetery
Webster County,
Louisiana

The earliest recorded burial in the cemetery was in 1867. There are numerous unmarked graves prior to that date. This was probably a Merritt family cemetery. The community was known as Moccasin Corner prior to the movement of the church to the Willis J. Merritt place in 1870. Mr. Merritt changed the name to Evergreen in honor of an old South Carolina church. In 1889 Mr. Merrill Monk donated the present church site. In 1914 a new church was built and two more acres of land was purchased from Mr. R. L. Lewis for the churchyard and Cemetery. In 1941 three acres was purchased from L. A. Anderson for the cemetery. The existing church building on this site was completed in February 1946. Evergreen Memorial Cemetery Association was incorporated on December 4, 1969.
