Mrs. Lena Upshaw Burnside, 88, of near Spearsville, La., died in a local hospital Tuesday at 10:30 p.m. after a short illness. Mrs. Burnside was born in Union Parish, La., Jan. 7, 1878, the daughter of Elisha and Julia Ann Garner Upshaw. She was a member of Canaan Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, W. T. Burnside; two sons, Richmond Burnside and Prentiss Burnside, both of Spearsville; three daughters, Mrs. Lonnie Smith of El Dorad, Mrs. Clarence Davis of Spearsville and Mrs. Clifton Smith of Minden, La.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren; and three great great children. The body was taken to the family home Wednesday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Canaan Baptist Church with Elder R. W. Rhodes officiating, assisted by Rev. Clarence Crow and Rev. Leaster Rhoads. Burial will follow in Canaan Cemetery under the direction of Pratt Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Charles Smith, Paul Smith, R. S. Burnside, Alton Vestel, Jr., Earl Butterworth, and Huey Williamson, all grandsons. (The El Dorado Times - September 10, 1964)
