He enlisted May 12, 1862 at Monroe, Louisiana. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces capitulated at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. He was paroled at Vicksburg on July 9, 1863. On March 29, 1864, his name appeared on a list of Officers and Men who have reported in camp for exchange at Vienna, Louisiana. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 26, 1865. He was paroled in June 1865.
