He enlisted as a Private in Henry County, Alabama on July 1, 1861, and was assigned to Company G, 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry. He was discharged on June 27, 1862, for "disease." He enlisted as a Sergeant on March 1, 1863, and served through the end of the war. He was listed as a Prisoner of War after Confederate forces surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865. He was paroled at Gainesville, Alabama on May 14, 1865.
