Variations in the spelling of his last name include: McComick, McCormick, and McCormack.
He enlisted as a Private on December 1, 1861, at Camp Wilcox, Mobile, Alabama. On a unspecified date he was appointed Sergeant. No additional records were located.
The 23rd Alabama Regiment was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. At the end of the war, the regiment surrendered in North Carolina in April 1865. It is unknown if Joseph McComic was still with the regiment on these dates.
