Born in Hines County, Mississippi.

He enlisted in the 9th Battalion Louisiana Partisan Rangers on June 5, 1862, in Greenwell Springs, Louisiana. He was discharged on October 15, 1862 at Port Hudson, Louisiana, by order of General Ruggles's General Order #4, dated August 30, 1862. He enlisted again on September 1, 1864, in the 3rd Regiment Louisiana Cavalry. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, on May 4, 1865. He was paroled on May 12, 1865, in Gainesville, Alabama.
