He enlisted in the US Army in Shreveport, Louisiana on September 24, 1943, as a combat engineer. His unit landed at Utah Beach on August 6, 1944 and for the next 7 months supported General Patton's 3rd Army's drive across France and German. He was wounded in battle in Germany and transferred to a hospital in France. He died on January 23, 1945, of those wounds (DNB - Died Non Battle).
