(NOTE: His civilian headstone listed his year of birth as 1836 while his military headstone listed it as 1838. He was 26 years of age when he enlisted in the Confederate Army in June 1861; therefore, his year of birth [according to military records] was 1835.)

He enlisted on June 8, 1861, at Corinth, Mississippi, at the age of 26. He was present for duty throughout his enlistment with a few exceptions. He was captured on February 16, 1862, at the Battle of Fort Donelson, Tennessee. As a Prisoner of War, he was sent to Camp Douglas, Illinois and on August 1, 1862, he was sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi for exchange on September 2, 1862. He signed out on leave for six days on October 28, 1863. His name is listed on the Register at Way Hospital, Meridian, Mississippi reporting he was admitted to the hospital on January 24, 1865, for a wound. There was no disposition other than he was furloughed afterward. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama on May 1865. He was paroled in Meridian, Mississippi on May 12, 1865. The parole listed his residence as Newton County, Mississippi.
