THE FIRST CEMETERY IN BATON ROUGE WAS THE
CEMETERY OF LA YGLESIA DE LOS DOLORES DE LA VIRGIN,
OUR LADY OF SORROWS, (THE SPANISH CEMETERY),
ESTABLISHED IN 1792 BY ORDER OF KING CARLOS OF SPAIN.
A "NEW" CEMETERY, ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CEMETERY,
WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1824.
THE REMAINS OF SOME BATON ROUGES FIRST SETTLERS
WERE MOVED FROM THE ORIGINAL SPANISH CEMETERY.
(THE SITE OF THE ORIGINAL CEMETERY,
BEHIND THE ST. JOSEPH CATHEDRAL, IS NOW A STATE OFFICE BUILDING.)
