JACKSONVILLE - James Jefferson Porter, 90, of Jacksonville, died Monday, March 28, 2011 at Carebridge Assisted Living Community. Graveside funeral services, with military honors, will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday at Forest Park Cemetery West, Shreveport, LA.
Mr. Porter is formerly of Shreveport, LA and Houston, TX. He was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific and China during World War II. He also retired from Exxon after 40 plus years as a senior supply coordinator. He was a member of the Joppa Grand Lodge of Louisiana F. & A.M.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Alford Porter and Fern Louise Edens Tunnell; and a half brother.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Wanda Lou Westley Porter; son, James Jefferson Porter, Jr., Lt. Col, USMC Ret. and his wife, Kathleen of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Kira Porter Boyd and husband John of Cape Carteret, Major Robert James Porter, USMC and his wife, Sarah of Beaufort, SC; great-grandchildren, Beau Thomas Boyd, Caroline Avery Boyd, Morgan Olivia Porter, and Owen Harrison Porter; two half-brothers; and three half-sisters.
Pallbearers for the service will be Bredt C. Westley and John A. Boyd, Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers for the service will be Major Robert J. Porter, Ronald Porter, William B. Jones, Douglas Matranga, Chase Westley Matranga, Dwight Lindemann, and Richard Cooper II.
The family will receive friends Friday morning, from 10:00 - 11:00 AM, prior to the service at Kilpatrick's Rose-Neath Funeral Home Southside, Shreveport, LA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Foundation for Hospice, 3391 Henderson Drive Ext., Jacksonville, NC 28546, or a charity of one's choice.
