He enrolled as 1st Lieutenant at Camp Moore, Louisiana on September 30, 1861. His name appeared on a Register of Commissioned Officers appointed in September 1861. He was on furlough beginning on December 16, 1861, and returned to duty on January 3, 1862. Company Muster Rolls reported in November 1861 he was at Camp Chalmette and in March 1862, he was at Camp Corinth. Company Muster Rolls indicated on May 23, 1862, he was dropped as 1st Lieutenant. On November 8, 1862, he was listed as 3rd Lieutenant. On December 5, 1862, his name appeared on a Register of Commissioned Officers appointed as 2nd Lieutenant. The January - February 1863 Company Muster Roll reported him absent on sick leave effective February 12, 1863. On February 13, 1863, he resigned his commission based on a Surgeon's Certificate. The certificate listed his ailment as chronic disease of the liver and bowels and that he was unable to perform his military duty for the past 6 months.
