He enlisted as a Private in Company A, 3rd Battalion Mississippi Infantry at Simpson County, Mississippi on October 25, 1861. He was discharged on May 2, 1862. in April 1862, the 3rd Battalion Mississippi Infantry became the 33rd Regiment Mississippi Volunteers.

Additional records indicated he enlisted as a Private in Company F, 39th Regiment Mississippi Infantry on April 30, 1862 at Simpson County, Mississippi. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after he was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 9, 1863. He was paroled at Port Hudson July 12-13, 1863. Company Muster Rolls showed he was present for duty from his enlistment until November 22, 1863, when he was listed as absent without leave. The Company Muster Roll for January - February 1864 reported he deserted at Enterprise, Mississippi on November 22, 1863. Company Muster Rolls for April - August 1864 reported he had rejoined his unit on April 23, 1864. On December 14, 1864, his name appeared on a Report of Men (of Sears' Brigade) who reached the main line of the enemy's works at Franklin, Tennessee on November 30, 1864.
