He enlisted June 3, 1861, at Corinth, Mississippi at the age of 38. The Company Muster Roll for July-August 1861 listed him as being transferred from Company A to Company F (McClung's Rifles) on August 17, 1861. On October 21, 1861, he was wounded at the Battle of Leesburg, Virginia. The Company Muster Roll for September-October 1861 listed him as absent due to a severe wound to his right thigh at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Virginia on October 21, 1861. The Company Muster Rolls for January-February 1862 reflected his status as present. On April 9, 1862, he was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No 3, Richmond, Virginia, and returned to duty on April 14, 1862. His name appeared on a Register for General Hospital No 18 (formerly Greaner's Hospital), Richmond, Virginia as being admitted for on April 28, 1862, for diarrhea. He returned to duty on May 12, 1862. The Company Muster Roll for May-June 1862 listed him as pending discharge. In July 1862, his name appeared on a Record of Discharge with a Surgeon's Certificate listing the cause for discharge as chronic and inflammatory diarrhea.
