He enlisted May 11, 1861, at New Orleans, Louisiana. The Company Muster Rolls for May-August 1861 listed him as assigned to special duty at Yorktown as a teamster. The Company Muster Rolls for September-December 1861 listed him as sick in the hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Company Muster Rolls for January-April 1862 did not list his status; however, his name appeared on a Register for the General Hospital, Petersburg, Virginia as having been admitted on April 9, 1862 with intestinal dysentery. He returned to duty on May 2, 1862. His name appeared on a Register for the General Hospital at Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia, after being admitted on May 12, 1862 for typhoidins. He returned to duty on June 14, 1862. The Company Muster Roll for May-June 1862 listed him as sick at the Brigade hospital since June 29, 1862. The Company Muster Roll for July-August 1862 listed him as sick in the hospital in the rear of the army since August 21, 1862. He was again present for duty as listed on the September-October 1862 Company Muster Roll. On December 20, 1862, he was detailed to the Quartermaster Department as reported on the November-December 1862 Company Muster Roll. He was present for duty on the January-February 1863 roll. The March-June 1863 Company Muster Rolls listed him as detailed in the Medical Department to drive an ambulance since March 3, 1863. The July-August 1863 Company Muster Roll reflected his return to duty on August 5, 1863. The Morning Report for Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia listed him as sick with pneumonia on November 30, 1863, and furloughed on December 16, 1863, for 40 days. He was listed as present for duty on the January-February 1864 roll; however, the November 1863-February 1864 rolls listed him as absent and sick since November 27, 1863. The Company Muster Rolls for April-August 1864 listed him as absent without leave (AWOL) since January 26, 1864 and currently in Louisiana.
