Curbey Grave Cemetery
Natchitoches County,
Louisiana

L C Curbey is known for killing the last recorded buffalo in Louisiana in the early 1870's. He respected the buffalo so much that his dying wish was to be buried at the site he killed the buffalo.

He was one of the original homesteaders, was a subsistence farmer growing everything that fed his family. For meat he hunted buffalo when they migrated to Louisiana in the Winter. In those days, the rolling Kisatchie Hills was not a forest, but was rolling plains of grass and tumbleweed.

His gravesite overlooks the buffalo run - an area of depressed ground approximately three to four buffalo wide. In the early to mid 1800's hundreds of buffalo traveled through the area.

The gravesite is approximately 2 miles south of the Dogwood Campground. Turn west on the gravel road (Forest Service Road 350) and drive approximately 3 miles. The generic cemetery sign will be on the north side of the road. The gravesite is on the knoll within 100 feet of the sign.
