He enlisted on May 6, 1862, in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was assigned to Company B, 11th Battalion Louisiana Infantry. The Company Muster Rolls showed him present for duty until he was captured on April 14, 1863. The Company Muster Roll for March - April 1863 showed he had been captured on April 14, 1863 on board the riverboat "Queen of the West." The C.S. Ram "Queen of the West" riverboat was operating in Grand Lake, Louisiana on April 14, 1863, when it was attacked by three US Navy gunboats. After being hit by long range shell fire, the riverboat was set on fire and destroyed. His name appeared on a list of Prisoners of War, dated April 25, 1863, as captured in Grand Lake, Louisiana on April 14, 1863; his name also appeared on another Roll of Prisoners of War as being captured on April 14, 1863, at Bayou Teche. He was paroled at Port Hudson on May 11, 1863. After his parole he was assigned to Company K, Consolidated Crescent Regiment Louisiana Infantry. The Company Muster Roll for January 0 February 1864 reported he had been sent to the hospital in Monroe, Louisiana on February 2, 1864. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Confederate forces surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 26, 1865. He was paroled at Natchitoches, Louisiana on June 9, 1865.
