Lafayette - Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 16, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Progressive Baptist Church for Charles Henry “Chuck” Lewis.

Services will be conducted by Pastor Lloyd Joiner, Jr.

Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.

Charles Henry “Chuck” Lewis was born on July 20, 1942 in Shreveport, LA to the late John Lewis and the late Gladys Smith Lewis. He departed this life on July 13, 2015. Charles lived a Christian life, filled with love for and service to God, his family, and his friends. He was baptized at an early age and was always involved in and concerned about every aspect of the church and its agenda. At the time of his death he was an active member of the Progressive Baptist Church of Lafayette, LA and Rev. Lloyd Joiner, Jr. was his beloved Pastor. Charles was a member of the Deacon Board, serving as its representative to the Trustee Board and the Music Department. Charles was educated in the Caddo Parish School System. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Mississippi Valley State University in IttaBena, MS and a Master’s Degree in the same area from LA Tech in Ruston, LA. He worked in the Caddo Parish School System from 1967-1980 and was employed by Lafayette Parish School Board from 1980 until his retirement in 2002. He was the proud owner and president of CHUCK’S T-Shirts and Specialities.

Charles leaves to lovingly cherish his memory his wife, Loretta T. Lewis; one son, Gary B. Lewis of London, England; two daughters, Janice Johnson of Shreveport, LA and Melanie (Hayward) Edwards of Casablanca, Morocco; two grandsons, Jansen Ford of Florence, SC and Xavier Elijah Edwards of Casablanca, Morocco; one granddaughter, Maya Noëlle Edwards of Casablanca, Morocco; two sisters - Josephine (Jerry) Sutton of Shreveport and Jeanette (Rev. Willie) Jones of Pascagoula, MS; a special niece, Gwendolyn (Druzy) Lee; a lifetime friend, Alvin (Doretha) Lindsay; three godchildren, Aletha Lindsay-Shather, Vallie Anderson, Nehemiah Tatman, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a brother, John L. Lewis; a sister, Norma Jean Lewis; a grandson, Darrien Deshon Lysre; two nephews, James and Roy Douglas, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

We all love you, Charles, but we know that God loves you best.

Visitation will be held Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Progressive Baptist Church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
