He was appointed Captain January 26, 1862. He enlisted as a Captain on March 4, 1862, in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. The Company Muster Roll for July - August 1863, showed he was on furlough beginning August 7, 1863. The Company Muster Roll for September - October 1863, showed him present for duty. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after his capture on November 30, 1864, at Franklin, Tennessee. On December 3, 1864, he was admitted to the U.S.A. General Hospital at Nashville, Tennessee for a gunshot wound to the right thigh. He was transferred to the prison hospital on December 8, 1864. On December 9, 1864, he was transferred from Nashville, Tennessee to the military prison in Louisville, Kentucky. He arrived at the prison the next day. On December 14, 1864, he was transferred from the military prison to Johnson Island, Ohio. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War at the Prisoner of War Depot near Sandusky, Ohio. He was released from there on June 17, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. A news article announcing his death reported he was serving in the State House of Representatives at the time of his death.
