He enlisted on May 14, 1862, in Franklinton, Washington Parish, Louisiana. His unit was initially designated as the 9th Battalion Louisiana Partisan Rangers, but later redesignated as the 3rd Regiment Louisiana Cavalry (Wingfield's). His name was listed on a Roll of Prisoners of War after the Confederate surrender at Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 9, 1863. He was paroled at Port Hudson on July 12, 1863. He has the distinction of being the first person buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
