He enlisted March 23, 1862, in Rapides Parish, Louisiana; however, all of the Company Muster Rolls beginning in May 1862 show he enlisted in New Orleans, Louisiana. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War after Vicksburg, Mississippi capitulated on July 4, 1863. He was paroled on July 7, 1863, in Vicksburg.

Following the war between the States, he was a member of the United Confederate Veterans.
