He enlisted May 29, 1861, in Corinth, Mississippi. He reenlisted on October 29, 1861, in Leesburg, Virginia. He is listed as sick in the General Hospital, Leesburg, Virginia on January 18, 1862 with Neuralgia. He returned to his company on January 24, 1862. The company muster roll for July-August 1, 1862 listed him as sick in the hospital in Richmond, Virginia, and that he returned to duty in September 1862. On January 9, 1863, he was admitted to the Confederate Army Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia, for Debilitas. On January 10, 1863, he was transferred to General Hospital, Lynchburg, Virginia. The company muster roll for May-June 1863 showed his status as on furlough at home. He never returned to his regiment.

On August 22, 1863, a letter written by (illegible), Hempstead, Texas stated J.O. Knighten, formerly of the 18th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, reported to (illegible) for duty. The letter stated Knighton claimed he became involved with 200-300 bad men and deserted to Texas. The letter cited, "...he foolishly gone into this thing through the influence of bad men and are now anxious to get out of the difficulty if assurances could be given them that they would not be courts martialed and discharged."

On December 11, 1863, he was listed as sick in the hospital in Galveston, Texas. On January 10, 1864, he returned to duty with Company C, 20 Regiment Texas Infantry (Elmore's Regiment). The company muster roll for May 1864 showed he was detailed as the "acting Commissary Sergeant" at Fort Jackson. He held that detail until September 1864, at which time he was granted a 30-day furlough. In October 1864, the furlough was extended to November 15, 1864, and then by special order, it was extended to December 1, 1864. The company muster roll for December 1864 reflected his status as sick at home (in Texas). He returned to duty in February 1865 and was detailed as the company clerk.
