He was born in Sampson County, North Carolina to Redman & Sarah Crumpler. On January 1, 1851, he married Susanah Broxson Crumpler in Holmes County, Florida.
He enlisted on August 1, 1864. His name appeared on the Roll of Prisoners of War after the army surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 26, 1865. He was paroled at Natchitoches, Louisiana, on June 10, 1865.
