Shirley Murov Eltis was born in Shreveport, La., on Dec. 31, 1924 and passed away May 31, 2014. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Lionel Willer Eltis; children, Sandra Eltis Weiss and husband Mel, of Atlanta, Ga., son, Brian Murov Eltis and wife Cindy of Dallas; grandchildren, Daniel Weiss (Tracy), Michael Weiss (Kate), Ashley Grossfeld (Marc), Blake Eltis, Lindsay Hochschuler (Josh), Drew Eltis (Miriam); great-grandchildren, Mason and Seth Weiss, Jacob, Jonathan and Sarah Grossfeld, and Jonah, Caleb and Liam Hochschuler; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Murov, Pauline Murov and Vivan Murov. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Bessie Murov; and brothers, Harold Murov, Joseph Murov and Lazar Murov.
Shirley graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1941 and Centenary College of Louisiana in 1945. Shirley and Lionel were married in 1946 and moved to Tyler, where they resided until 1978. While in Tyler, Shirley was active in many organizations. She served as president of Temple Beth El, the first woman to serve as president of a Reform Jewish congregation in the state of Texas. In addition to her actively serving on the board of several organizations, she was an avid needleworker and the owner of a successful needlework business for 11 years.
In 1978, Lionel was named chairman of the board of CMI, known as Louisiana Paper Company. After 30 years, she and Lionel returned to their home in Shreveport. Upon returning to Shreveport, she continued her involvement in civic and religious organizations including the board of North Louisiana Goodwill Industries, Shreveport Chapter of Hadassah, B'nai Zion Congregation, Shreveport Family Counseling and Children's Services, Shreveport Symphony Guild, North Louisiana American Red Cross and actively assisting Lionel with running The Paper Shack and Party Stores.
Honoring Shirley as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Daniel Weiss, Michael Weiss, Blake Eltis, Drew Eltis, Marc Grossfeld and Josh Hochschuler.
Shirley will be remembered by family, friends and caregivers. She is remembered also by especially devoted friends, Abby and Wiley Robinson, and her wonderful friend, Telisa Savore. The family would also like to thank the staff at Live Oak for the care and compassion shown to Shirley.
Her funeral will be held Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at 10 a.m. in the Sanctuary of B'nai Zion Congregation. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Officiating will be Rabbi Dr. Jana L. De Benedetti. Following the interment, Lionel and his family will receive guests at a luncheon at B'nai Zion Congregation.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to B'nai Zion Congregation, 245 Southfield, Shreveport, La., 71105, or to the charity of the donor's choice.
