He enlisted as a Private on August 2, 1861, in New Orleans, Louisiana. On April 28, 1862, he was appointed as the 5th Sergeant. His name appeared on the Register Of Chimborazo Hospital #4, Richmond, Virginia, for debility, from November 28, 1862 until December 9, 1862. The Company Muster Roll for January 1 - August 31, 1864, reflected his rank as the 4th Sergeant. His name appeared on the Roll of Prisoners Of War as part of the Army of Northern Virginia when surrendered by General Robert E. Lee at the Appomattox Court House, Virginia, on April 9, 1865. He was paroled on April 10, 1865.
