He enlisted July 7, 1861, at Camp Moore, Louisiana as a Private in Captain R W Pearce's company. He was Remustered on February 5, 1862, at Camp Carondelet, Virginia. The company muster roll for May-June 1862, reflected his rank as 4th Corporal. He was hospitalized at the General Hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond, Virginia, July 15 - 20, 1862, for debilitation. After release from the hospital, he remained present for duty until he was wounded at Sharpesburg, Kentucky, on September 17, 1862. After time in the hospital, he was placed on furlough. He was present for duty on the Company Muster Roll for January-February 1863. On November 7, 1863, he was captured at the battle of Rappahannock Station, Virginia. On March 9, 1864, his name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War at Point Lookout, Maryland, as paroled until exchanged. The record showed he had arrived at Washington on November 11, 1863, and exchanged on March 10, 1864. On July 20, 1864, he was hospitalized at Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, Georgia, for a gunshot wound. He was released from the hospital on July 22, 1864. He was assigned to Detachment of Provost Guard in Columbus, Georgia, from November 30, 1864, until December 14, 1864. The record indicated his rank was 2nd Corporal, but detailed as Acting Sergeant Major.
