Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 19, 2011, 11 am, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Rogers "Roget" Martin. He will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be observed Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 7-10:30 am at Kinchen Funeral Home.
Mr. Rogers "Roget" Martin, 93, passed away on February 9, 2011, at Meadow Brook Specialty Hospital in Lafayette. A resident of Lafayette, LA, he was born in Youngsville, LA on September 20, 1917.
A longtime entrepreneur, he was the owner of Rogers' Night Club in Lafayette. During the Jim Crow Era, his establishment was well known as one of the few entertainment spots for African Americans. He was also one of the first black bakers at Keller's Bakery.
He is survived by his loving daughter and son-in-law, Theresa Martin Alexander and George Alexander, Sr. of Lafayette, LA; two sons, Harold (Adrienne) Clay of San Antonio, TX and Michael (Carissa) Martin of San Diego, CA; one step-daughter, Wanda Daigle (Michael) Alexander; 12 grandchildren, Dena Nabers, Kathy Holmes, Danny Alexander, Connie Garrett, Nikol Alexander-Floyd, George Alexander, Jr., Nedra Alexander, April Greenhouse, Harold Clay, Jr., Malcolm Clay, Stacey Thompson, and Lodias Martin; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; two nieces, Linda Smith and Shirley Chaisson; one sister-in-law, Cedell Martin, and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wives, Gertrude Martin, Viola Toliver, and Beverly Rivera; parents, Sanders and Sabrina Perron Martin Sr.; brothers, Ernest, Sanders, and Paul Martin; step-brother, Joseph Pickett; and sister, Agnes Martin Wilson.
Kinchen Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of final arrangements.
