SERGEANT MAJOR US Army
August 28, 1955 - December 23, 2010

LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Sergeant Major Joseph Alexander, 55, who quietly slipped away December 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at his residence.

Services will be conducted by Rev Robert Seay, OFM.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Sergeant Major Joseph Alexander wore many hats: he was a husband, father, brother, son, uncle, cousin, best friend, confidant and a torchbearer for his family.

Joseph, son of Eula and Robert Alexander was born August 28, 1955, the fifth of six children. He was affectionately known by his family and friends as “JoeJoe” and “Cookieman”. We all know that he most enjoyed barbequing (and was especially famous for his barbeque ribs), listening to old school music and also working on cars. He was a member of Metric Riders.

Joseph grew up as a member of St Paul the Apostle Church in Lafayette where he received all of his sacraments and enjoyed ringing the church bell as an altar boy.

He received his elementary education at St Paul School and his secondary education at Lafayette High School, graduating in 1973. He continued his education at Lafayette Regional Vo-Tech in Lafayette majoring in electronics.

Following his education, one of his major pursuits was joining the Louisiana National Guard December 1, 1978 and serving until his death December 23, 2010. He was mobilized three times: “Operation Desert Storm” – November 30, 1990 until May 25, 1991; “Operation Iraqi Freedom III” – May 7, 2004 until November 24, 2005 and “Operation Iraqi Freedom X” – January 5, 2010 until December 23, 2010. He was promoted to the rank of “Sergeant Major” October 17, 2010.

He was employed at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for 30 years and was recently honored for his service.
He met and married Linda Gail Robinson April 3, 1980. To this union five children were born: Rachel, Yolanda, Joseph II, Michelle and Marcus Alexander, all of Lafayette. Joseph loved his family very much and there was nothing he would not do for them.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memory his wife Linda R Alexander; daughters Rachel (Cedric), Yolanda and Michelle Alexander; sons Joseph II (LaQuinta) and Marcus Alexander, all of Lafayette; grandchildren Aveynce Sonnier, Cedriana Alexander, Thomas Thibodeaux, Noah Alexander, Xavier Alexander and Jo’Laya Alexander, all of Lafayette; mother Eula Arceneaux Alexander; sister Leona Arceneaux; brothers Robert Alexander, Jr and Walter P Alexander (Shirley) and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by father Robert Alexander, Sr; sister Mary Elizabeth Alexander Washington; brother Patrick Alexander; maternal grandparents Leonce and Lucille Arceneaux; paternal grandparents, Onezephar “FreddY” and Elizabeth Rubin Alexander.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Syrie Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm. A rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm.
