James Aaron Skipper was the fifth of seven children born to Joseph Wesley and Yolande Wiltz Skipper on October 20, 1952 in Lafayette, LA. He grew up in the small community of Cypress Island.
He was referred to as Jim or Skip by friends and family. On August 11, 1973, he married Mary Ann Williams. Through this union, two children were born, James Michael Skipper and Emerald Melissa Skipper. They lived for many years in Grand Wood and later moved to Montgomery, Alabama.
James was a graduate of Carver High School Class of 1970. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana and a Masters Degree in Administration and Supervision from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. James began his teaching career at Teche Elementary as a math and science teacher. Later, he became a coach at St. Martinville Elementary, then Breaux Bridge Elementary School.
James was ready for a change and worked for couple of years for the Louisiana Association of Educators. He then returned to St. Martin Parish and taught at Breaux Bridge Elementary. As he continued on his journey through life, he became the Asst. Principal at Cecilia High School, then later moving on to become the Asst. Principal at St. Martinville Junior High. He later became Principal at St. Martinville Junior High. He retired from the St. Martin Parish School System with thirty years of service. After retirement from the St. Martin Parish School System, he worked briefly with the St. Martin Parish Sheriffs Office. While living in Alabama, James worked as the Asst. Principal of St. Jude Educational Institute.
James loved working with children, watching them learn and grow. His love of education can truly be seen, through the lives of students he taught. James touched so many lives with his wit and sarcasm. He never met a person he didnt know or didnt want to strike up a conversation with. His stories and embellishments will live in our memories forever
He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. He was also a member of the True Friends of LaPointe. He loved spending time with his friends, fishing, telling stories and having fun. He loved life and enjoyed living it. He was the family Organizer. He made sure that everyone was given an assignment and he just sat back and made sure his requests were carried out. His sense of humor and at times brutal honesty will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.
