William Leigh Brent was born February 20, 1784 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland to Robert Brent and Dorothy Leigh. He grew up in Maryland where he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He married Maria Fenwick who was his cousin and they had ten known children. He moved to Louisiana about 1809. He was appointed Deputy Attorney General for the western district of the Territory of Orleans where among his duties was prosecuting fugitive slave cases. In 1822 he was elected to the eighteenth Congress and moved to Washington, DC. He served from 1823 - 1829. After his term he moved back to Louisiana and resumed his law practice in Louisiana and Washington, DC. He started the Whig party in Louisiana. According to his tombstone, William died July 3, 1848 in St Martinsville, St Martin Parish, Louisiana. He is buried in a modest grave in St Michael Catholic Cemetery in St Martinsville, Louisiana.
