He enlisted on August 18, 1861, in Captain John A. Dixon's Company) at Camp Moore, Louisiana. On October 13, 1861, he was furloughed for 30 days due to sickness. Company Muster records showed on September 24, 1862, he was furloughed for 60 days to Winn Parish. Company Muster records showed he was captured on May 16, 1863 at Baker's Creek, Mississippi. His name appeared on a roll of Prisoners of War as being captured at Champion Hill. He was sent to Memphis, Tennessee, on May 25, 1863, as a Prisoner of War. His name appeared as a Prisoner of War sent from Fort Delaware to Point Lookout, Maryland, on September 20, 1863. The roll showed while at Point Lookout on January 25, 1864, he took an Oath of Allegiance to the United States and joined the United States Army.
