BATON ROUGE, LA - A native of Junction City and a resident of Baton Rouge, Joel Clement "Joe" Elkins, died on Monday, April 26, 2010.
Joe was born on April 18, 1925, was a retired Exxon chemist.
Joe is survived by his wife Beverly Tinsley Elkins, of 62 years, his sons, Gary Joe Elkins and wife Kate, and Randall Tinsley Elkins, and grandchildren Kathryn Elkins McLeod and husband Matthew McLeod, and Nicholas, Elizabeth, and Geoffrey Elkins, and great-grandchildren Sophia and Rowan McLeod, and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Clement Harrell Elkins and Ora Upshaw Elkins, five brothers, Billy, Colvin, Brodie, Ted, and Reggie Elkins, and one sister Janet Odom, and a beloved grandchild Andrew Clayton Elkins.
Joe graduated from Junction City High School and Louisiana State University and served in the U.S. Navy in WWII.
He was a member of University Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, and he was a 32nd Degree Mason. After retirement, Joe restored British sports cars and traveled to Europe and the Orient.
He loved country music and he visited the Grand Ole Opry on his 80th birthday.
Visitation at Green Oaks Funeral Home will be on Wednesday, April 28, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. On Friday, April 30, at 9:30 a.m., there will be a visitation at Ruple Baptist Church, 4690 Highway 534, between Homer and Haynesville, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m.
Interment at White Hall Cemetery, Dykesville, will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joe's memory may be sent to University Baptist Church, 5775 Highland Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70808; Ruple Baptist Church, 4690 Highway 534, Homer, LA 71040; or to the Andrew Elkins Creative Arts fund at Isidore Newman School, 1903 Jefferson Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70115.
