He mustered into service in Columbia, Louisiana, on April 19, 1862, at the rank of Captain. His name (at the rank of Major) appeared on a Roll of Prisoners Of War after the capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on July 4, 1863. He was paroled on July 9, 1863, at Vicksburg. On March 29, 1864, his name appeared on a Roll of Officers and men of the 31st Regiment Louisiana Infantry who have reported in camp for exchange at Vienna, Louisiana. On June 13, 1865, he took the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
