Ruth Durst Calk was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She entered into the Lord's nearer presence on February 5, 2015.

Ruth was born in Shreveport on August 31, 1922, to Juan Vincent Durst and Ruth Baker Durst. She was a 1939 graduate of C. E. Byrd High School and attended Dodd College. She worked for fifteen years as office manager at Whitaker Construction Company.

Among her many interests were fishing, bridge, cooking for her family and friends, visiting those homebound or in nursing homes, and reading three books a week from Shreve Memorial Library. Ruth Calk was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where she served as Eucharistic Visitor, Stephen Minister, Intercessor, and Christian Education Leader for 30 years in St. Catherine's Guild. She was also a faithful team member for Teaching the Living Christ Ministry.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband James Dallas Calk, a brother Juan Vincent Durst, Jr. and his wife Betty Wyatt Durst, and a sister Azalie Durst Bowerman and her husband Max Henry Bowerman.

She is survived by two daughters, Lois Leyendecker Fraser and Marye-Anna Gress Sherrill. Ruth had four grandchildren: Andrew Fraser and wife the Reverend Ann Benton Fraser, Dr. Austin Fraser and wife Dr. Anitha Christopher, Alan Fraser, and Anna Fraser Underwood and husband James Underwood. Ruth was great-grandmother to Susanna and Eleanor Fraser; Morgan, Evelyn and Peyton Fraser; George, Lucy, and Walter Underwood; and Benjamin Fraser. Ruth is also survived by three nieces and a nephew, including Susan Bowerman Johnston, husband Jim Johnston, and their son Marshall Johnston of Shreveport. Ruth is survived by loving friends Jeanie Fentress, Pat Reed, and John Jackson.

A service celebrating the life of Ruth Calk will be held at Rose-Neath Funeral Home, 1815 Marshall Street on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at 12:00 Noon with visitation from 10:30 to 12:00. Officiating will be the Reverend Paul Martin and Dr. Jeanie Fentress. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be, Andrew Fraser, Austin Fraser, Alan Fraser, James Underwood, Dan Triplett, and John Worthy.

With each of her grandchildren contributing to the list, Grammy was comforting, loving, sincere, sensitive to the needs of others, gentle, selfless, deeply spiritual, joyful, thankful, adventurous beyond her time, unapologetically authentic, and a caretaker with the twinkle of laughter in her eyes and the weight of the world on her prayer list.
