Benjamin Russell’s headstone reflects his middle initial as either a T of F. “Benjamin F Russell” served as a Lieutenant in Company B, 25th Louisiana Infantry and “Benjamin T Russell” served as a Private in Company D, 1st Regiment Alabama Reserves (formerly Company D, 62nd Regiment Alabama Infantry). The Confederate Pension Application Index Database reflected a pension application was filed by Salinda Frances Skinner Russell, spouse of Benjamin Thomas Russell (May 21, 1843 – March 21, 1889). Therefore, Confederate States Army service listed in this entry is based on Benjamin Thomas Russell’s service record.

Benjamin T Russell enlisted on June 1, 1864, at Selina, Alabama. He was captured on April 4, 1865, at Blakely, Alabama. His name appeared on a list of Prisoners of War near Spanish Fort, Alabama, on April 12, 1865, as a prisoner requiring hospital treatment for measles. His name also appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War received at Ship Island, Mississippi, on April 15, 1865. He was transferred from Ship Island to Vicksburg, Mississippi on May 1, 1865. He was paroled at Jackson, Mississippi on May 19, 1865.
