He enlisted March 1, 1862, at Vernon, Louisiana. The re-enlisted men of Company K, 9th Regiment Louisiana Infantry, while returning from furlough, were captured at Huntsville, Alabama on April 11, 1862. Benjamin Barr was among those captured. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War transferred to Johnson Island on May 9, 1862. On August 25, 1862, his name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War transferred from Camp Chase, Ohio (on board Steamer Jno. H. Done) to Vicksburg, Mississippi for exchange. The transport arrived near Vicksburg on September 11, 1862. After the prisoner exchange, the 9th Regiment Louisiana Infantry was attached to the 12th Regiment Louisiana Infantry and became the 2nd Company M.

On December 16, 1864, he was captured at Nashville, Tennessee. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War on January 1, 1865, as prisoners being forwarded to Louisville, Kentucky. The records indicated he arrived at the military prison at Louisville on or about January 5, 1865, and was to be forwarded to Camp Douglas, Illinois; however, a second Roll of Prisoners of War, dated January 2, 1865, indicated he was transferred from Louisville, Kentucky to Camp Chase, Ohio. Records at Camp Chase reported he was received there on January 4, 1865. On February 21, 1865, his name appeared on Roll of a Detachment of Paroled & Exchanged Prisoners of War at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia.
