He enrolled on April 19, 1862, in Columbia, Louisiana as a Private. On July 4, 1863, he was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi after capitulation of Confederate forces. He's listed on the Roll of Prisoners of War as a Private. On April 1, 1864, his name appeared on a list of soldiers of the 31st Louisiana Infantry who reported in camp for exchange at Vienna, Louisiana. He was listed as a Corporal on the list. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War when his unit surrendered in New Orleans, Louisiana on May 26, 1865. His rank was listed as Sergeant. He was paroled at Monroe, Louisiana on June 13, 1865.
