He enlisted as 3rd Corporal, Company D, 1st Special Battalion (Wheat's) Louisiana Infantry on June 8, 1861 at Camp Moore, Louisiana. On June 9, 1861, he was promoted to 1st Corporal of Company B, St Paul's Battalion, Louisiana Foot Rifles, formerly Wheat's Special Battalion. On or about August 1862, Company's B and C became Company I and K of the 15th Regiment Louisiana Infantry. He became the 5th Sergeant of Company I. The company muster roll for August 31 - December 31, 1862 listed him as 4th Sergeant, and beginning in January 1863 he was listed as 2nd Sergeant. He was listed as a Prisoner of War when his unit surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama on May 4, 1865. He was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi on May 10, 1865.
