He enlisted in the US Army in 1857 and served with the 1st Florida Mounted Volunteers in the Seminole Indian War. He was discharged in 1858.

On October 12, 1861, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Camp Moore, Louisiana. On April 7, 1862, he was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. His name appeared on a registry as being admitted to USA Hospital steamer May 1, 1862 for a leg fracture. A later record reported him admitted to USA General Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio on May 5, 1862 for Vulnus Sclopeticum (Gunshot wound). His name appeared on a registry of those killed, wounded and missing of 2nd Corps, Army of the Mississippi at the Battle of Shiloh. He was listed as seriously wounded. His name appeared on a roll as a Prisoner of War at Camp Chase, Ohio in July 1862. On August 25, 1862 he was exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was discharged on October 11, 1862. He was issued a Certificate of Disability indicating the wound to his leg left him "lame and entirely unfit for military duty."
