He enlisted as a Private on July 29, 1861 at Fredonia, Alabama. On June 27, 1862, he was captured at Harrison's Landing. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners of War as captured on June 28, 1862 "before Richmond" and sent to Ft Delaware on July 9, 1862. On July 12, 1862, he was delivered to Aiken's Landing and exchanged on August 5, 1862. His name appeared on a report of casualties of 5th Brigade (Pryor's) in the engagements around Richmond June 26 - July 1, 1862.
At the time, his status was listed as "missing." The Company Muster Rolls for June 30, 1862 - February 1863 showed he was absent on wounded furlough. On April 21, 1863 he was appointed to 2nd Corporal. He was captured on April 6, 1865 at Farmville, Virginia. His name appeared on a Roll of Prisoners Of War in Newport News, Virginia. On June 24, 1865, he took the Oath of Allegiance while at Newport News.
