“Edith” means “Rich Gift” in Old English and Edith Louise Harris Covington was a gift to the people touched by her generosity and creativity over the years. She was born January 8, 1929 in Columbia, Louisiana. She passed away June 15, 2017 at the age of 88. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, William G. Covington, Sr., her mother Maude Harris, her dad, William James Harris, sisters, Marie Nolan, Naomi Gates, and Audrey Richardson.
She is survived by her sons William Jr. and Gary and numerous nieces and nephews. Her legacy includes a lifetime of service. She worked as a volunteer at Glenwood Regional Medical Center since 1993. She expressed herself creatively through making crocheted gifts for friends and family members and visited residents of nursing homes since her youth. She was a participant of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
She taught Sunday school at the Claiborne Church of God (now Family Church), where she was a founding member, the West Monroe Church of God, and Rocky Branch Assembly of God. She and her husband were volunteer bell ringers for the annual Salvation Army Christmas drives at times. She was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. Her wedding was the first one held in the West Monroe Church of God.
She traveled to all 50 states, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. She also toured the Caribbean with “Miss Ada” from First Assembly of God. She loved Jesus Christ and lived with an eternal perspective.
Pallbearers will be Hugh Posey, Jerry Beatty, Timmy Beatty, Robert Anderson, Tom Anderson, and Wesley Glidewell.
