He enlisted on February 12, 1862 and was assigned to Company K 9th Regiment Louisiana Infantry. On April 12, 1862, he and his company were captured at Huntsville, Alabama, while returning from furlough. Upon his exchange at Vicksburg, Mississippi, he was assigned to Company M 12 Regiment Louisiana Infantry. His name appeared on Muster Roll, dated September 22, 1862, as formerly attached to the 9th Louisiana Regiment, now in camps at Jackson, Mississippi, as an exchanged prisoner.
