He enlisted in Shubuta, Mississippi, on April 16, 1864, at the age of 17. His name appeared on roll as the 4th Corporal on May 1, 1864, but on May 4, 1865, he was again listed as a Private. His name appeared on the Roll of Prisoners of War when his unit surrendered at Citronelle, Alabama, on May 4, 1865. He was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi, on May 17, 1865.
