He enlisted December 15, 1863, at Clark County, Mississippi.

The 31 Regiment Mississippi Infantry was first organized as the 6 (Orr's) Battalion Mississippi Infantry. In February and March 1862, it was increased to ten companies and mustered into the Confederate service as Orr's Regiment Mississippi Infantry. Shortly afterward the designated was changed to the 31 Regiment Mississippi Infantry. About April 9, 1865, the regiment was consolidated with the 3 and 40 Regiments Mississippi Infantry and formed the 3 Consolidated Regiment Mississippi Infantry.
